Chapter 32
Sara's head was reeling all the way back to their quarters. She was trying to figure out what just happened, and the only answer was one she did not like. The mood of the entire squad was tense as everyone had come to the same conclusion about what happened. It only made Sara madder when she saw General Allison smiling at her.
Once they were in their quarters, Topher followed her until they were away from the rest of the group. "I cannot believe he betrayed us like that. If I get the chance I will make him pay for it; you can mark my words your majesty."
Sara said, "I need to be alone for a bit." She then walked into one of the side rooms. She walked over to a corner and sat down, with her back to the corner. The only answer that made sense was that the Woodsman had delivered her into the hands of the dwarf king. She could not figure out why or what the dwarves wanted with a human ruler. Maybe they wanted to go to war with the humans? She was sure that the Woodsman was now getting his reward for being a good servant to the dwarf king. Her hatred grew as she realized he was lying when he said that he answered to no ruler. He must have been working for the dwarf king all this time. Maybe Emos and Hathorn has struck a deal. Perhaps that is what stopped the last war, the joining of the two kingdoms.
As she sat there, she did not realize at first that she had started crying. She was surprised to find water on her face, but when she realized they were her tears, her heart ached. Not only had the mission been a failure, but she mourned her beloved husband. Who would rescue him now, assuming he was still alive. She kicked herself mentally for being so foolish to trust this Woodsman. And now her foolishness would cost everything, the war, her kingdom, and her beloved Duke.
"Oh Henry, I am so sorry, I have failed you," she said into her tears. She sat there crying in her hands for hours.
Topher stood at the door, hearing the gentle sobs of his queen. This made his heart harden. If it was the last thing he ever did, he would make the Woodsman pay for what he did. They might all be dead but so would be the Woodsman.
