Chapter 22
King Childs stepped into his private chambers with a delightfully evil smile. Why he had not thought of this before now he did not know, but no matter. His original plan of winning over General Orrand was not going well. The King had been his most charming and flattering to the General. That was not an easy task for the King as he was used to people flattering him. He was the King, after all, and it was the natural order of things. People should flatter and adulate a king; a king should never flatter or adulate people below him. So great was his hatred of Queen Bellfourth that he would bend that rule in order to get the better of her. The last few nights he had been having private dinners with General Orrand. He had poured out such charm and flattery that it made him feel ill after each meal. It did not seem to be working on the General. It was clear that the General was too dense to pick up on what the King was offering. Last night he dropped the idea of joining the army of Delland to the General. Unfortunately the King could not read the General's response. If the General even understood what the King was offering, he made no show of if. Even though the King was getting frustrated, he had decided to give the General a couple more days to come around before he would give up that approach.
That all changed in that meeting. The King was still bothered by the General calling him out about the refugees from Doorshire, but he would wait and make the General pay for it. He could wait since he now knew how he would defeat Carriland and claim all that land for Delland and himself. When the impertinent General said that he was sending ALL his armies to Doorshire to fight Emos, a plan came to him. Once the Queen was dead and all the armies of Carriland were off fighting Emos, Carriland would be open for the taking. He was not as stupid as that Queen. He had told the others that he was sending all his armies but in truth he would only send half. Once the Queen was dead and the Carriland army weakened and in a foreign land, he would send a dispatch for his forces to cross into Carriland. By the time the Carriland army returned, Carriland would belong to King Childs. King Childs knew this was a brilliant plan and he would probably go down in history as the greatest military leader ever in Anon.
The King stood there for a minute, basking in his future glory. Finally he walked over to his desk and began making out orders. The sinister smile on his face growing with every pen stroke.
